The training roadmap: an indispensable tool

Digital transformation cannot be improvised. It requires, among other things, the upgrading or development of a range of skills and expertise that will enable a company to carry out its transformation effectively.

Contrary to popular belief, technological tools are not necessarily the key to success in a digital transformation project. One of the major strategic pillars remains the human factor, which is too often underestimated, or even overlooked.

Yet, a team’s willingness to embrace change and management’s ability to support employees in developing their skills are two essential conditions for the success of such an initiative.

Indeed, the recent Digital Transformation In The Manufacturing Industry Statistics survey, published in June 2025 by data provider WifiTalents, reveals that 80% of manufacturing executives consider workforce upskilling to be critical to successful digital transformation.

Aligning programmes with identified gaps

A majority of industrial manufacturing companies (83%) invest in training their teams to develop digital skills, and 62% invest in digital HR tools to manage talent and competencies.

This is why the L-DIH (Luxembourg Digital Innovation Hub), through the University of Luxembourg Competence Centre of the, offers the creation of a tailored training roadmap for each company, based on its current skill levels and future strategic direction. “The aim is to align training programmes with identified skills gaps and to ensure that employees receive the right training for their roles, while supporting the company’s broader objectives,” explains Dr Thomas Benz, Training Specialist at the University of Luxembourg Competence Centre.

An initial Digital Skills Maturity Assessment (DSMA) first analyses the current competences within the organisation and identifies training needs among the employees.

In addition to this crucial first step, the definition of the company’s strategic objectives must also be addressed, as they serve as the foundation for all future actions. “At this stage, it’s not about technology or digital tools at all. It’s purely about strategy,” says Mickael Desloges, Senior Advisor – Assessments & Roadmaps at Luxinnovation.

Maximising human capital

With both the DSMA and the company’s strategy, it is then possible to design a strategic plan and create a real roadmap. “This is essential to establish a tailor-made training plan to help maximise human capital and improve employee retention,” adds Dr Benz

These L-DIH services are intended for companies based in Luxembourg that manufacture, transform or assemble products and are part of a group employing less than 3,000 people worldwide. “It is important to stress that everything is designed to make life easier for the company: the cost of the assessment is 100% covered, with no upfront payment required and no special administrative procedures. Eligibility is verified from the outset to avoid any unpleasant surprises,” explains Mickael Desloges, Senior Advisor ‑ Assessments & Roadmaps at Luxinnovation.
